Interactive Installation

Connected Christmas Tree

Interactive light

An interactive light installation connecting the 3 Method studios in London, San Francisco and New York for the Christmas of 2018.

The installation uses geometric icicle-like paper lanterns fitted with intelligent LED lightbulbs. An ultrasonic sensor is triggered when someone walks by in one of the studios. Then, the icicles in the three studios across the world flash in their respective colours.

This piece was created as a collaborative project between myself (interaction design & creative coding) and Josh Leigh (visual and product design).

Transatlantic connection

With three studios separated by thousands of miles, we felt the installation could bring people together during the festive period. We replicated the same installation, running on Raspberry Pi and networked over a server in each of the studios.

When employees walked past their own local installations, the icicles flashed white. However, the icicles in each of the other studios lit up in a different colour. Through these different coloured lights, each studio could make their presence felt with their transatlantic colleagues.
